Week 5 Story: Isis's Plan

Isis was tired. Just plain tired. She’d been sitting in the shadows for far too long and knew she was destined for better things. And to constantly see Ra getting the things she deserved just made it worse. It should be her ruling Egypt, sitting on the throne, living as a god among men. She had always known she was meant for something more. That’s why she picked up magic. Being an enchantress was as close as she could get as a human to having the power she craved. And finally one day she couldn’t take it anymore. She decided that she was going to get Ra’s power by any means necessary. So she began making a plan. She knew the path Ra took every day to get back to his palace, so she decided that she would attack there. Or rather, she would plant the attacker there. She chose a particularly poisonous snake, a viper, and put it right in Ra’s path. And just like she predicted, he was bitten and immediately collapsed in pain. His men carried back him onto his boat and Isis quietly slipped on board amid the chaos. She approached Ra and told him that she could take away his pain on one condition: he tell her his secret name. She knew that once she had his name, she would wield the power he wielded and be as powerful and unstoppable as she had always dreamed. He refused initially, knowing that it would mean she would have his power. But as his pain grew worse, his desperation won out, and he told her. She cast a spell to get rid of the venom, and heal Ra. As his name was transferred to her, she felt the power course through her and knew immediately that all her long-held desires had been awarded to her. She smiled knowing that her life was about to change for the better, and it was her own cleverness that had gotten her to that point.

Authors note: I stuck to the original story where Isis tricks Ra into telling her his secret name so that she can have the power of the gods. All the major plot points are the same, but I wrote it from her perspective as a strong woman who is doing whatever it takes to get what she wants, even though it is by somewhat questionable means.

  1. Hi Caroline! Great to read your story! I did Egyptian legends this week also so that helped give me some background for your story. I love that you kept the basic details the same but told the story from Isis' perspective instead, I think that really breathed new life into it! I'm all about the girl power so I liked that you made her less of a villain and more of an...opportunist? I think a lot of these stories can be a little black and white about who is the bad or good and I'm all for adding a little moral ambiguity! Great job and I can't wait to read more from you!

  2. Hey Caroline! I truly enjoyed reading this story! I personally didn't have any knowledge of the Egyptian Stories before yours but I really enjoyed it. I found the idea of this story quite entertaining and creative. I think that this was clever in the sense that you were able to emotionally show what they were feeling at times. I also enjoyed how the character was just trying to get ahead in her mind. Great story!
