Week 2 Story: Another Metamorphosis

Image
Another Metamorphosis Pygmalion was happier than ever after his sculpture was brought to life. He had created her body and given her a fitting name, Ivory, after the beautiful stone she was carved from. She was the perfect wife for him, the perfect mother to their son, always tending to what he needed and always at his beck and call. He was perfectly content with his life, but Ivory was not. Though Pygmalion had created her physical form, her soul was hers alone. And she was restless. She felt that she was not meant to live the life she had been born into. Ivory felt she had more to offer the world than just bringing her husband his meals, caring for their child, and tending to their home. She longed to escape her husband, take their child and discover what the world had to offer. Pygmalion was not the good man that he once was. The gift from the gods had corrupted him and filled him with hubris. He was crass, demanding, and saw her still as his creation. Due to this, he fou

Reading Notes: Week 2

Image
The first story I was interested in was  Metamorphosis . There were not many characters, but I guess the story was simple enough that it didn't need many. The main event of the story was the girl coming to life, but if I were to rewrite it, I think I would go about it differently. it felt very one-sided in terms of the characters. The woman was purely what Pygmalion wanted her to be. I think there is rom for a much more interesting development of her character. The second story I liked was  The Three Roses . It was very similar to Beauty and the Beast, except he was changed by an act of violence rather than love. It was all very matter-of-fact, like no one had much choice in anything that happened. Mary had to go to the castle, and had to cut off the basilisks head, and then the prince had to marry her. I would maybe have put a little more emotion into it. Pygmalion

Reading Options

A lot of the units peaked my interest! I personally have always loved Greek and Egyptian mythology, but I think that to get the most out of this class, I should branch out a little! One unit that caught my eye was  Women Saints . I love a good story about a strong woman, so I think these stories would be right up my alley. A second unit I liked upon skimming the stories was  Grimm (Librivox) . This one had the most familiar stories, so I thought it would be nice to read some of the stories I'm already somewhat familiar with. The third unit I was interested in was  Dante's Inferno . I've always wanted to read this, so I figured now was as good a time as any! Cinderella

Time Strategies

Image
I read  How to Beat Procrastination , and found several good ideas. I thought the idea of present bias was very interesting , because I hadn't thought much about it, but it makes a lot of sense. Specifically, I liked the idea of getting to the root of the problem and asking why it's so hard to start doing a certain task. I think that could be very helpful for identifying the problem and getting the ball rolling. The second article I read was  The Psychology of Checklists . To look at exactly why checklists work so well was very interesting, especially considering that is one of the most successful methods I have for getting tasks done. This semester I plan to incorporate more checklists, and to make sure they are very detailed. Do It!

Thoughts on Technology Tools

Image
I am excited to develop the skills to run a blog and create a website. I think these will be good skills to have in my back pocket moving forward! I'm also intrigued by the graphic editing, because I've never done anything like that before, as well as the audio recording. I think audio would add a fun element to a blog post or website. For the most part, I am unfamiliar with most of the technology we will be used, so I look forward to figuring it all out! Growth Mindset

Thoughts on Assignments

Image
I am interested by most of these assignments. I've never taken an sort of creative writing class or any class where I had to write my own stories, so I'm curious to see what that will be like! I am very excited to do the reading and hopefully expand my horizons a little. As for the extra credit assignments, I am very interested in learning more about growth mindset and the HEART topics. Overall, this class is looking like it will be a lot of fun! Carol Dweck Quote

Thoughts on Growth Mindset

This was the first time I had heard of Carol Dweck and the idea of growth mindset. I think personally I am closer to the growth mindset than to fixed mindset. There is definitely a part of me that strives to get good grades and sometimes I put that above my ability to develop and learn new skills. But for the most part, I can step back and realize that I always have more to learn, even though that can be a challenge sometimes. I am very interested in learning more about growth mindset this semester. As for my class schedule, the only class I am worried about is my Honors discussion class, because as a rule I do not thrive in discussion based classes. Other than that I am very excited about my other classes, including this one!

Introduction to a Math Major

Image
My name is Caroline and I'm from Jenks, Oklahoma. I've lived in Oklahoma all my life, but my family is from New England. I am currently a junior and a mathematics and economics major. I've always loved math, but I didn't officially declare it as my major until last semester. My favorite thing about math is that once you understand it, thats all there is to it. It isn't up for debate or interpretation like english or history. It's just the same no matter what! The plan after graduation is to go to Boston University for their actuarial science masters program! Then I'll take the tests to become an actuary and hopefully find a job somewhere in New England! Boston University Last semester my favorite class was my statistics class. I've always loved statistics, and I am hoping to go into a field with a mathematical focus in statistics. Over summer break I went back to visit family in Rhode Island and then a few weeks later I spent about 2 weeks in th

Storybook Favorites

Image
The first Storybook I read was  Greek Myth Retold: Women . I am familiar with a good amount of greek mythology, but I was somewhat unfamiliar with the stories of Medea and Antigone specifically. The title of the Storybook was what really caught my eye. I was very interested to read about two women from a genre of stories that focuses primarily on men. As for the aesthetic of the Storybook, I think it had a very good use of pictures mixed with text. It used traditional Greek art of the women, which I think was a great choice for these stories, as opposed to any more modern or abstract photos. Jason and Medea - John William Waterhouse The second Storybook I looked at was Death's Final Story . I initially looked at it for the title, but this one actually grabbed my attention because it was in second person, which is rare to find in any story. There were not many photos in this story, and the ones that were included were ominous and vague. But I actually think this was very appr

My Favorite Place

Image
My favorite place is really anywhere in Rhode Island. It's definitely my home away from home. Thats where my family is all from and where most of them still live. Whether its spending time at Narragansett Beach or walking through Pickford at Christmas, any time I spend there feels like I'm home. I don't get back as much as I would like to, but eventually I'll live close enough that I can visit any time. Newport shoreline of Easton Bay Pond at Wickford
