Topic Brainstorm

The first topic I am interested in is Goddesses. I'm very interested in female based stories and I love that women are so prevalent in creation stories and in almost every religion. I have previous knowledge of Greek, Roman, and Egyptian goddesses, but I would like to learn about more cultures. I am interested in the idea of bringing goddesses from different cultures together into a story. One specific story that interested me was The Journey of Isis.

Another topic that caught my eye was Mermaids. Maybe eventually I'll narrow that down to sirens, but for now I think the broader topic is better. I liked The Mermaid Wife a lot. I think I would either do a gender flip or a retelling from the mermaids point of view.

Women of Camelot also seemed interesting to me. I love stories about strong women, and female nights defiantly satisfy that interest. I liked the stories about Britomart, especially A Wicked Enchanter. I think I would do continuations of these stories rather than complete retellings.

The Dutch Stories were another topic that caught my eye. My mom's entire family is from the Netherlands, so I've always felt a strong connection to that culture. I liked The Entangled Mermaid especially. I think for these stories I would consider a gender swap or a sequel-type story.

Week 9 Story: Three Women and An Ox

Ndoza’ntu, Songa’nzila, and Fulla Fulla had been waiting all day for their husband Nenpetro to come back. He had left many hours ago to kill an ox for their dinner. He hunted every day for their food, bringing back whatever he could find, whether it was an antelope, a monkey, an ox. It was really whatever he had found that day. But today he had wanted ox, so off he had gone. But now the three women had begun to wonder where he was. Not out of necessity, but out of a combination of annoyance and boredom. The women had been gifted with special abilities. Ndoza’ntu had the power of dreams, Songa’nzila had the gift of guidance, and Fulla Fulla had the ability to raise the dead. Ndoza’ntu took a nap as a way to pass the time, and during her nap, she dreamed of their husband lying on the ground after he was attacked by an angry ox.
